NEWTON, Cache County – A 35-year-old man has died after the piece of farm equipment he was working on overturned on him after a 3-year-old accidentally depressed the gas pedal, announced Cache County Sheriff’s Office Thursday.
Two men were working under self-propelled farm equipment around 4:50 p.m. at 574 W. 6800 North, just north of Smithfield, according to Lt. Doyle Peck of the Sheriff’s Office. The piece of equipment had the engine running with the brake on while the men worked underneath.
The 3-year-old sat on the equipment while the men worked underneath and went downstairs – likely to find his father, Peck said.
The child stepped on the accelerator, releasing the brake and shifting the equipment onto one of the men. The man was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Peck.
The assistant who intervened on the scene did not specify what type of equipment it was. The identity of the 35-year-old has not been disclosed.
The incident is still under investigation, Peck added.
