Nork Solutions develops animal feed from food by-products | weekly farm

While Nork Solutions started out with a desire to feed cattle affordably, it quickly became more than that and when the next generation took over operations, Eric Berrill understood the importance of making a lasting impact, both on socially and environmentally.

REGENERATE food by-products into high quality agricultural food products; this is how Nork Solutions has invested in reducing the waste deficit in Western Australia.

While the company’s early days were more about seizing opportunities than saving the planet, the inevitable result was to keep food manufacturers’ excess production from ending up in landfill.

As a key feature, Nork Solutions takes surplus bread from the state’s largest suppliers and small bakeries and turns it into a livestock feed additive; an idea born from his own cattle farm.

Eric Berrill now owns and runs the business, but it was originally started by his father, Gerry, who owned a few cattle on a farm in Mundijong.

In the mid-1990s, Gerry found a way to process unused bread from local bakeries for use as food.

It was a cost-effective way to manage their feed costs and use product that would just go to waste.

The size of the holding continued to grow and Mundijong’s farm was turning into a mud pit as it could not support the amount of cattle, so to anticipate the problem the Berrills sold it and moved to a larger property in Westdale.

The Westdale feedlot kept growing and at its peak there were around 1,500 head of cattle, but eventually they began to run into problems with the water supply.

“Because of its success, we wanted to see if there was a demand in the market and after a lot of research we knew we could produce a great product that meets the needs of farmers around the world,” Mr. Berrill.

“We started selling our surplus feed to other farmers and around 2012 we started closing the farm and selling the livestock to just focus on supplying produce to other farmers and now we offer cost-effective power solutions.”

Nork was called Nindi when owned by Gerry (understood? Nork and Nindi rather than Mork and Mindi).

It is more than just a business, however, being socially and environmentally conscious with a focus on finding value from what others see as waste.

In food production, in general, if there are high fixed costs and low marginal costs, they overproduce and oversupply because they cannot afford to miss a sale.

For example, for bread, the cost of ingredients is only minimal, but the cost of factory, rent, labor, fuel, trucks, logistics, etc. is much higher.

As a result, they have to overstock, because that will reduce the cost of all these other factors on average, and on average, small bakeries expect around 30% wastage.

“At the end of the day, if you go to a bakery or a supermarket and they don’t have a product, they’ve not only missed a single sale, but for $1 of ingredients, they’ve missed $4. of gross profit, which would then help pay for freight, logistics and any additional expenses,” Berrill said.

Based in Kenwick, Nork Solution produces approximately 100,000 tonnes of animal feed each week.

“In this case, overproduction is the solution for them and not overproducing makes it economically unfeasible.”

Each week, Nork Solutions produces around 100,000 tonnes of animal feed, but this should not be a condemnation of the food industry as they need this overproduction for the business model to work.

Instead, it’s an indication of what can be done when the two industries work together – the farm taught the Berrills ingenuity and it’s the same practices that are now used in the business.

While Nork Solutions started out with a desire to feed livestock affordably, it quickly became more than that and when the next generation took over operations, Mr. Berrill understood the importance of making a lasting impact, both both socially and environmentally.

“While Dad had employees, he was really the owner/operator and if he had been hit by a truck, it would have all come to a halt,” he said.

“When I took over I wanted to set it up so that if I got hit by a truck it could continue and as long as it was impacted the business wouldn’t stop dead.

“Being less involved in operations has allowed me to focus and invest my time and energy in developing new products and services that reduce the environmental impact of farming and food practices.”

Since taking over, Mr. Berrill has brought in other bakeries and started to look at other products, like molasses and flour.

He also started researching what else can be done with the feed itself, such as using it for chickens, sheep, etc. and is also studying the possibility of making a fertilizer from it.

“I now have the capacity and the time to be able to look at these blue sky ideas,” Berrill said.

“Our brand is focused on creating processes that will have a positive impact on the world today and in the future.”

Agriculture and healthy agricultural practices are not learned overnight, they take years and sometimes generations to master.
