The center creates a matrix for 50 agricultural products with good export potential to help boost agricultural exports

In addition, APEDA also surpassed its own export target of $23.7 billion for the 2021-22 financial year by recording shipments of $25.6 billion.

According to provisional figures released by the DGCI&S, agricultural exports increased by 19.92% in 2021-22 to reach USD 50.21 billion. The growth rate is remarkable as it exceeds the 17.66% growth to USD 41.87 billion achieved in 2020-21 and was achieved despite unprecedented logistical challenges in the form of high freight rates, container shortages , etc. the export of products listed on the APEDA list can be seen in Graph-1. It represents the comparative export of APEDA products for the current year, 2021-22 and the previous year 2020-21. The grain sector in APEDA exports contributes more than 52% in 2021-22. Livestock products and other processed foods account for 17% and 15% of APEDA’s exports respectively in 2021-22.

The historic achievement of the past two years will go a long way towards realizing Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision of improving farmers’ incomes.

Relative to total agricultural exports, APEDA exports recorded a growth of 16% when they reached $25.6 billion in 2021-22, compared to $22.03 billion in 2020-21.

According to data from the DGCI&S, the export of rice was the main source of foreign exchange income with 9654 million dollars in 2021-2022, growing by 9.35% compared to the previous year when it reached 8829 millions of dollars.

Wheat export hit a record high of $2,118 million in 2021-22, growing 273% from 2020-21 when it reached $567 million, while other grains saw growth by 53% reaching 1083 million dollars in 2021-22 compared to the previous year when it received 705 million dollars.

Exports of pulses recorded a growth of 34%, reaching $358 million in 2021-22, compared to $265 million in 2020-21.

Dairy grew by 96% to USD 634 million in 2021-22 from USD 323 million in 2020-21, while buffalo meat recorded growth of just 4% as beef exports fell from USD 3,171 million in 2020-21 to USD 3,303 million in 2021-22.

Exports of poultry products increased to $71 million in 2021-22 from $58 million the previous year and exports of sheep/goat meat increased by 34% to $60 million in 2021-22 from $44 million dollars the previous year.

Exports of fruits and vegetables increased by 12% to reach USD 1676 million in 2021-22 from USD 1492 million in 2020-21, while exports of processed fruits and vegetables increased by 7% to reach USD 1202 million in 2021 -22 against USD 1120 million the previous year.

Exports of other processed food products increased by 34% in 2021-22 to reach $1,164 million from $866 million in 2020-21. Cashew nut exports also increased by 7% to $452 million in 2021-22 from $20 million the previous year. Floriculture products recorded a 33% increase when they reached USD 103 million in 2021-22, compared to USD 77 million in 2020-21.

According to 2021-2022 data, APEDA’s top export destinations are Bangladesh, UAE, Vietnam, USA, Nepal, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, India Iran and Egypt.

The significant increase in agricultural exports is seen as a testament to the government’s commitment to improving farmers’ incomes by giving impetus to boosting exports of processed agricultural and food products.

The increase in exports of agricultural and processed food products is largely due to the various initiatives taken by the Center through APEDA, such as the organization of B2B exhibitions in different countries, the exploration of new potential through specific and general marketing campaigns through the active participation of Indian embassies.

The government has organized more than 300 outreach programs in collaboration with state governments to improve exports of agricultural products.

“We have also created a commodity matrix for 50 agricultural commodities that offer good opportunities for expanding our export portfolios,” said Dr. M Angamuthu, President of APEDA.

The Center has also taken several initiatives to promote Geographical Indications (GIs) registered with agricultural and processed food products in India by organizing virtual buyer-seller meetings on agricultural and food products with major importing countries in the world.

In order to ensure transparent quality certification of products for export, the government has recognized 220 laboratories across India to provide testing services to a wide range of products to exporters.

The Centre, through APEDA, also assists in upgrading and strengthening recognized laboratories for export testing and residue monitoring plans. APEDA also provides assistance under the financial assistance programs for infrastructure development, quality improvement and market development to stimulate the export of agricultural products.

Participation of exporters in international trade fairs has been organized, which provides a platform for exporters to market their food products in the global market. National events such as AAHAR, World Congress of Organic Agriculture, BioFach India, etc. were organized to promote agricultural exports.

The government, under the aegis of APEDA, is also initiating the registration of horticultural product packaging centers to meet the quality requirements of the international market. The registration of export units for peanut shelling, grading and processing units, for example, aims to ensure quality compliance for EU and non-EU countries.

APEDA also registers meat processing plants and slaughterhouses to ensure compliance with global food safety and quality requirements. Another key initiative includes the development and implementation of traceability systems that ensure food safety and quality compliance from importing countries.

To boost exports, APEDA compiles and disseminates various analytical information on international trade, market access information among exporters and responds to trade enquiries.

Under the PM Gati Shakti – National Master Plan, APEDA is working with various ministries including railways and roads to improve connectivity through faster transportation of agricultural products as they are perishable in nature and therefore require immediate and rapid delivery to its destination from the manufacturing stations.

“The government has focused on boosting exports from Purvanchal, Himalayan, NER, J&K and Ladakh states,” Dr Angamuthu said.

In line with the government’s Digital India policy, APEDA has implemented several new initiatives based on digital technology which have played a key role in enabling agricultural exports worth $25 billion in its basket in 2021-22 .

APEDA has adopted several world-class technologies and software in the IT division, such as Blockchain technology implemented in hortinet traceability, Farmer Connect portal, Geographical Indications (GIs) promotion portal, mobile application , the iTrack system, TraceNet, the organic promotional portal, the Agriexchange application and the cloud. Migration etc.

As the demand for natural products increases and consumers demand greater quantities of foods, cosmetics and medicines containing natural ingredients, the Center is formulating a strategy to promote the export of agricultural products. in consultation with the Department of Agriculture to develop production standards and a certification system.

A Farmer Connect portal has also been set up on the APEDA website to provide a platform for Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) or Farmer Producer Companies (FPCs), cooperatives and women entrepreneurs to interact with exporters. About 3,295 FPOs and FPCs and 3,315 exporters have been registered on the portal so far. Over 24 lakh organic farmers registered with APEDA. India is the largest producer of organic products in the world.
